Equality and diversity

The University is committed in its pursuit of academic excellence to equality of opportunity and to a pro-active and inclusive approach to equality, which supports and encourages all under-represented groups, promotes an inclusive culture and values diversity. The University's Equal Opportunities Policy is supported by equality policies in respect of disability, gender and race. An equality & diversity online training course is available to University staff, designed to reflect the needs of the University.

Tackling Islamophobia

This guidance was created by the UUK to assist universities in tackling Islamophobia and anti-Muslim hatred. The briefing defines Islamophobia and anti-Muslim hatred in the UK, highlights issues facing Muslim students, and suggests where universities can act - especially in terms of welcoming Muslims, improving understanding, the prevention of and responses to Islamophobia and implementation of the Prevent duty. It also features case studies to illustrate the approaches being taken by universities, and provides links to further information, training and resources.

Gender reassignment

This guidance is intended for Departmental and College staff who have been approached by a student undergoing gender reassignment who is seeking to make changes to their student records. The document provides advice on how to support those students with reference to relevant equality legislation, data protection and disclosure protocols.

Harassment and sexual misconduct

This University website provides advice for supporters of those who have been subjected to sexual harassment or violence.

Guidance documents, both for staff in supporting students, and for students who have experienced sexual assault, are available:

The College template Harassment and Sexual Misconduct Procedures is available for Colleges to adopt and adapt as they see fit. Please see also this explanatory covering note.

Safeguarding

A template Safeguarding Policy was approved by the Senior Tutors' Committee, with the intention of providing a helpful framework for Colleges needing to implement such a policy, or as a guide for Colleges wishing to undertake an update of an existing policy. Colleges adopting the template may wish to seek legal advice to take account of their specific College context prior to implementation.
